Sergeant Cloud, whose career with Tampa PD reached a controversial turn when he was stripped of his role as head of the Vice Squad in March 1975, didn't stand down. Relieved of his official duties, yet he chose to keep fighting against the scourges of drug dealers and organized crime by offering his skills to a federal task force. His service was cut tragically short on October 23, 1975, when, at 33, an assassin in the employ of the mob gunned him down at his Seminole Heights home after he answered his front door.
The suspect behind this brutal act was later brought to justice, facing execution for the crime. In tribute to Cloud's dedication, the Tampa City Council, along with the city's police department, honored him posthumously by reinstating his former title, signaling their respect for his service and endurance in the line of duty.
