A Tarrant County jury has convicted Clifford Johnson, 38, of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resulting in a 45-year prison sentence. The jury reached the verdict after Johnson was charged with attacking a woman he was dating and firing a gun at a vehicle that came upon the scene.
According to a social media post from the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office, the incident occurred on August 20, 2022, when Johnson and the victim's car suffered a tire blowout. The woman began to change the tire before Johnson assaulted her, pushing her to the ground, punching her head, and then stomping on her face.
The situation escalated when a bystander’s vehicle approached. As the woman sought safety, fleeing towards the bystander's car, Johnson discharged his firearm, striking the car's tire and passenger door. The details of the assault and shooting emphasize the threat Johnson posed not only to his victim but also to an innocent passerby who happened to be at the scene.
Expressing gratitude towards the law enforcement authorities, the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office stated, "Thank you to the Fort Worth Police Department for your work on this case and for keeping our community safe." The prosecuting team behind the conviction included Assistant District Attorneys Kimberly Barragon and Stephany Fitz, Investigator Josh Neiswender, and Victim Coordinator Imelda Lopez, whose combined efforts ensured that justice was delivered in a courtroom where evidence and witness accounts weighed heavily against Johnson.
