A Tecumseh High School student was arrested following an alleged threat to "shoot up" his school, sparking an intensive investigation by local authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Following an FBI tip, Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office and Tecumseh Police Department worked jointly to address the potential danger posed by the social media post, which was made a month ago but only came to investigators' attention over the weekend. The agencies moved fast, arresting the student within mere hours after receiving the federal alert, according to KOCO.
The FBI informed the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office of a "credible threat made toward an unknown school within Pottawatomie County," as per a KOCO news release. A detailed investigation into the juvenile suspect ensued, culminating in evidence found at the suspect's home that supported the averred threat. During an interview, the student reportedly confessed to harboring intentions to harm others at the school.
In a subsequent development, Tecumseh Public Schools decided to cancel classes for Monday and Tuesday as a safety precaution. This decision was influenced by "new developments regarding threats against our students," shared the district via social media. Pottawatomie County Captain Jared Strand noted in an interview with News9, that the suspect had posted images of weapons on social media, which were purportedly taken inside a Tecumseh High School restroom. Strand emphasized that verifying the location of these images remains a priority.
The student now faces several charges, including Terroristic Threats, Threatening Acts of Violence, Violation of the Computer Crimes Act, and Possessing and Distributing Obscene Material, according to KFOR's report. The suspect is being held at a juvenile facility, however, due to age, no identifying details have been made public. Pottawatomie County Sheriff's office has confirmed the authenticity of the threat, further solidifying the gravity of the situation.
Tecumseh Public Schools has announced that they will reopen following Fall Break on October 20. While the threat was targeted at a single high school, a heavy police presence was deployed to all campuses in Tecumseh on Monday, documented by both local news outlets and the sheriff's office, as per KFOR.
