Today, Jzamir Keys, an 18-year-old involved in the 2023 killing of a retired police officer in Las Vegas, has pled guilty to second-degree murder among other felony charges. In a turn of events that promptly headed off what was poised to become a January trial, the teenager's plea arrived closely following that of his co-defendant, Jesus Ayala, 20. News3LV reports that Keys also admitted to guilt on three felony counts after prosecutors struck a deal.
This case, which gained attention due to a video going viral, allegedly depicts the two suspects intentionally swerving to hit Andreas Probst, a 72-year-old former police chief, as he was cycling. The video was a key to pivot the allegations from a hit-and-run to a pointed act of homicide. According to 8 News Now, the plea agreement for Keys specifies an 18-year to life prison term, hinging on the gravity of a crime perpetrated not merely against an individual.
The other figure in this tragic dyad, Ayala, last week entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder, a move that, as per his agreement, anchors him to a 20-year to life sentence. His acceptance of charges includes robbery and battery with the use of a deadly weapon, despite opting for an Alford plea for the battery charge, which does not equate to an admission of guilt but recognizes the prosecution's likely persuasive evidence. Both young men, who were juveniles at the time of the crime, will be subject to parole mandates after 20 years due to Nevada's juvenile justice laws.
Slated to be sentenced on December 16, the duo also faces a wrongful death lawsuit launched by Probst's bereaved family.
