The hefty sum of $50 million from Tom Golisano's pocketbook has set a new financial record for the University of Maryland Medical System, tagged as the largest donation the institution has ever embraced. The funds are earmarked to go towards the University of Maryland Children's Hospital, with some ambitious plans on the horizon, according to information provided by WBALTV.
Golisano's contribution is set not only to greatly improve the facility but also to actively kickstart gene therapy services tailored for the pediatric demographic. This focus on rare diseases complements a broader intention to expand and enhance the hospital's NICU and PICU. As part of this power move, Baltimore's children's healthcare facility will soon bear the name University of Maryland Golisano Children's Hospital, a nod to the donor's ongoing investment in children's health. Golisano, known for founding Paychex Inc., has his philanthropic handprints on a plethora of health and education initiatives, exceeding $1 billion in contributions.
More than just a cash injection, this donation ensures the hospital's role in a nationally connected network, the Golisano Children's Hospitals, all sharing the vision of evolving healthcare for young patients. Mohan Suntha, president and CEO of the University of Maryland Medical System, emphasized the cohesive effort amongst these hospitals when he stated, "We will share our knowledge, that we will share our best practices, and that we will learn from each other and by doing so we'll elevate health care for children not just here in the state of Maryland but across the country and the world," according to an interview, reported by WMAR2News.
Tom Golisano expressed a personal commitment to children's health, noting the fulfilling experience of witnessing the positive impact of Golisano Children's Hospitals. "I am fortunate to be able to help others in this way, and I'm looking forward to seeing what these hospitals can achieve together. Also, I plan to continue making similar transformative gifts that will strengthen this new alliance," Golisano said in a statement obtained by WBALTV. Whether they are expanding multi-site studies on rare diseases, CAR T-cell therapy, or addressing social determinants of health, the effects of this donation will reverberate through generations, ensuring cutting-edge care remains accessible to those most in need.
