Honolulu drivers, brace yourselves for a bit of construction congestion. Beginning October 6th, the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Design and Construction (DDC) is set to install vehicle loop detectors, striping, and pavement markers at the major intersection of Kapi‘olani Boulevard and Kalākaua Avenue. According to the City and County of Honolulu announcement, work is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, wrapping up by October 8.
But the improvements don’t stop there. Additional efforts are aimed from Harding Avenue to Atkinson Drive, commencing October 13-24, between the nighttime hours of 7 p.m. and 3:30 a.m., from Monday through Thursday – giving weekends a rest from the rumbles of rehabilitation. These upgrades are part of a broader street project that the City anticipates finishing later this year. Motorists are advised to prepare for possible delays, the City suggesting that, drivers allow extra travel time, and exercise caution while navigating the zones of improvement, as reported by the City and County of Honolulu.
Travelers coursing through these veins of Honolulu's transit system should expect periodic lane closures, potential detours, and the orchestrated chaos that often accompanies urban renewal. The Department of Design and Construction emphasizes the importance of heeding the guidance of traffic control devices and the officials who will populate the project sites to maintain a flow, albeit staggered, of passage, as per the City and County of Honolulu.
For those facing the inevitable overture of construction noise, concerns can be channeled to project manager Angelou Barcelo, available at (808) 295-1117 or via email at [email protected]. Queries beyond the din of development, or related to other facets of the work, should be directed to the Department of Design and Construction's hotline at (808) 768-8400, as detailed by the City and County of Honolulu.
