Good news for travelers in Cowlitz County: the stretch of State Route 411, known to locals as the West Side Highway near Castle Rock, is back in business. After a significant closure to address a hazardous sinkhole, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) confirmed that the road reopened to traffic on Friday, Oct. 24, reported by WSDOT.
The sinkhole, which spanned 15 feet and threatened the road's integrity, was a byproduct of an elderly, failing culvert that had been affected by severe spring rains. The repair work, undertaken by Tapani, Inc., necessitated a closure of SR 411 that began on Monday, Sept. 8, and spanned from mileposts 6.1 to 11.3. "Replacing this culvert was critical for both driver and environmental safety," remarked WSDOT Project Engineer Jennette Queen, expressing the importance of the emergency repairs, which restored safe water flow beneath the road surface.
With the complete reopening of the highway, restrictions that limited the passage of freight trucks and other heavy vehicles have been lifted. This resumption of normal traffic flow signals a welcome return to daily routines for many residents and businesses affected by the closure, and the vital connection is restored for the region.
Culverts like the newly installed 14-foot wide structure play a crucial role in sustaining road and environmental health, facilitating the movement of water, and, in this instance, fish populations under the road. WSDOT's efforts not only patched up a hole and remedied a potential flooding hazard but also took measures to ensure the infrastructure will endure. The community, which showed remarkable patience during the weeks of work, can now look forward to smoother and safer commutes.
In a move that demonstrates the value placed on maintaining the integrity of Washington's roads, as well as the environment they cross, WSDOT has proven its commitment to systemic, long-lasting solutions. As the seasons shift and heavy rains become part of the regional forecast once more, drivers around Castle Rock can rest assured that SR 411 will hold steadfast against the elements.
