Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has taken action against Matthew Edmiston, a fraudulent contractor who scammed Tucson residents, swindling them out of $75,000 for home improvement projects he never completed. As reported by the Attorney General's office, Edmiston was convicted on charges related to theft and operating without a contractor's license. He is now facing a combination of probation and jail time – specifically, 5 years of probation and stints at the Pima County Jail, including 75 consecutive weekends following an initial 30-day incarceration.
In a statement, Attorney General Mayes underscored the damage inflicted by illicit contractors, saying, "My office is serious about holding fraudulent contractors accountable. Reputable contracting businesses and innocent families are both harmed by fraudulent contractors, and we won’t allow it in Arizona." Edmiston's ploy involved posing as a registered contractor, entering into contracts across Pima County, starting various home renovations, such as roof repairs and countertop replacements, pocketing payments, but failing to deliver on his promises. The confirmed cases involve nine victims who collectively lost over $75,000.
The court has mandated that Edmiston must pay $18,000 in restitution to four victims. Moreover, it has left the door open for 90 more days – allowing additional victims to come forward with their restitution claims. With no prior felony convictions, Edmiston's sentencing reflects the severity of his crimes against unsuspecting homeowners. The need for justice is acutely felt among those who had placed their trust in his services, only to be left with the wreckage of incomplete work and financial loss.
