Rep. Ron Stewart of Tulsa is reviewing Oklahoma’s parole processes with a focus on efficiency and rehabilitation. According to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Stewart has consulted a range of stakeholders, including individuals with firsthand experience of incarceration, to identify ways to improve the system.
During a study session with the Civil Judiciary Committee, participants from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Pardon and Parole General Counsel, and District Attorneys discussed reforms aimed at improving communication with victims and enhancing the overall parole process.
Stewart’s review includes access to mental health and substance abuse treatment for inmates of all security levels, as well as improvements to reentry programs designed to prepare individuals for work and community reintegration.
The initiative seeks to create a parole system that balances accountability with support and provides effective services to help individuals successfully return to society.
