Two individuals are now facing charges after an incident involving U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood, according to ABC7 Chicago. Marimar Martinez, 30, and Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, 21, allegedly used their vehicles to strike another car carrying CBP agents, before using their vehicles to box them in on West 39th Street and South Kedzie Avenue. Following the vehicle ramming, a CPB agent discharged about five shots, striking Martinez. She was later located at a repair shop by paramedics and taken to a hospital for her injuries. Ruiz was apprehended at a gas station close to the scene. Both suspects are from Chicago and have been charged with assaulting, impeding, and interfering with a federal law enforcement officer.
During the Saturday morning incident, protests unfolded against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the same neighborhood, as detailed by NBC Chicago. DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, Tricia McLaughlin, stated that agents conducting routine patrols were unexpectedly rammed by 10 vehicles and subsequently "boxed in." One driver was armed with a semi-automatic weapon ,which led agents to "fire defensive shots." Martinez, who was named in a CBP intelligence bulletin for allegedly inciting violence against agents online, managed to drive herself to the hospital following the shooting. No agents were reported injured in the confrontation.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the involvement of its personnel via social media statements. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced the deployment of "more special operations to control the scene" in anticipation of a growing crowd. Meanwhile, Chicago Police officials clarified that while they responded to document the incident and to maintain public safety, the investigation falls under federal jurisdiction. The incidents have added tension to the ongoing “Operation Midway Blitz,” an immigration enforcement effort that has resulted in over 1,000 arrests since September 8, sparking a series of demonstrations.
Protesters have rallied not only at the location of Saturday's shooting but also at an ICE processing center in the west suburban area of Broadview. Skirmishes have escalated between agents and demonstrators, with federal agents dispersing tear gas on at least one occasion. Despite increasing tensions, no arrests were related to the protests on Saturday as of 2 p.m., as reported by authorities. Videos and images from the multiple sites captured both the law enforcement response and the vocal opposition of protesters challenging federal immigration actions, including ICE activities within the city.
