Evergreen Park Police, responding to reports of an active shooter at the Walmart located at 2500 West 95th Street, cleared the store to discover a 23-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman with injuries. According to NBC Chicago, the man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his leg, while the woman was hit in the foot.
Suspect details surfaced as officers arrested a man who was seen fleeing the scene by witnesses. The alleged shooter had reportedly been chasing and shooting at the 23-year-old man as he entered the store. Authorities later located the vehicle associated with the suspect, some five miles away, on the 800 block of West Marquette. Amidst evolving details, charges have yet to be formalized against the captured suspect, as the investigation continues to unravel the day's events.
Clarifying eyewitness reports and the sequence of events, CBS News cited the Evergreen Park Police Chief Michael Saunders. The victim was struck at least five times in the leg, Saunders revealed, affirming the severity of the man's injuries. An unexpected victim of the shooting, the 70-year-old woman was likely struck by a bullet that ricocheted outside the storefront.
A Walmart customer recounted the terrifying moments inside the store to CBS News, saying, "I heard gunshots, and that's when I was running for cover, and everybody was scattering everywhere. Just running and that was it. That's all I heard was bow, bow, bow, gunshots." The store became an impromptu evacuee assembly, as shoppers strived to flee from the echo of gunfire that filled the store's aisles. Meanwhile, the police, in coordination with Chicago authorities, are proceeding to thoroughly investigate the vehicle found and gather evidence pertinent to the case.
Walmart, when reached for a statement, deferred to law enforcement, indicating the active status of the investigation. "At this time, we are deferring any additional questions to law enforcement as this is an active investigation," a company spokesperson mentioned. Those with further information on the shooting or beneficial insights into the incident are urged to contact the Evergreen Park Police Department at 708-422-2144, promoting community engagement to aid in the investigation's progress.
