On Sunday morning at Ke Iki Beach in Haleiwa, strong surf swept two visitors—a 76-year-old man and a 69-year-old woman—into the ocean. They were taken to the hospital in serious condition after a 7:35 a.m. 911 call. Local fishermen from Waianae, who first saw the incident, said, "At first we lost them in the white water, and then the boys ran over there and jumped in to help," according to KHON2.
Paramedics were also sent to Ke Iki Beach, arriving around 7:45 a.m., as reported by KITV. The two victims received advanced life support before being taken to the hospital in serious condition. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, and no further details about the victims’ condition have been released.
Ocean Safety authorities, including Lt. Jesse King, reported a recent incident at Ke Iki Beach, which was unguarded at the time as lifeguard duty begins at 8 a.m. "Ke Iki Beach is one of the most dangerous beaches on the island," Lt. King said, as mentioned by KHON2. Honolulu Ocean Safety recorded over 2,700 preventative actions and 25 rescues on the North Shore that day. The beach has strong currents, dangerous shorebreak, shark sightings, and hazardous rocks, with warning signs posted. A similar incident occurred last year, when three people were swept into the surf and two did not survive.
