The city of Unionville, Missouri, is set to receive $1.7 million from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to upgrade its wastewater treatment system. The funding will support significant improvements, including consolidating flows from two existing facilities, to help Unionville meet new effluent permit requirements.

Expected to be completed by February 2027, the upgrades aim to extend the lifespan and improve the efficiency of Unionville’s wastewater system while providing financial relief to residents. The funding includes a $718,000 low-interest loan and a $1 million grant from the state’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund, along with $43,987 in local funds. According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, this funding package is expected to save Unionville’s ratepayers more than $1 million in principal and approximately $320,000 in interest over the 20-year term of the loan.

Director of the Department of Natural Resources Kurt Schaefer emphasized the department’s commitment in the official announcement, stating, “The department will continue to fund upgrades to wastewater infrastructure across Missouri to help preserve our precious water resources while keeping customers’ utility bills affordable.”

Missouri’s Financial Assistance Center, part of the Department of Natural Resources, provides various funding options for communities needing improvements to water quality, wastewater, and drinking water infrastructure. The Unionville project will be financed fully or in part with funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
