The University of Utah's diving program is making quite the splash in the inaugural US Professional Diving Coaches Association Division I Coaches Poll. As per UtahUtes.com, the women's team has leaped to the ninth position nationally and snagged the top slot within the Big 12 Conference. Not to be outdone, the combined men's and women's teams weren't far behind, coming in at an impressive 13th place.
Utah's head diving coach, Richard Marschner, isn't shy about expressing pride over these rankings. "This is a huge honor to be ranked so highly in the coaches poll," Marschner detailed, as per UtahUtes.com, highlighting the weight such acknowledgment carries, coming from fellow professionals in the field. He added, "This ranking is not just about this year's team, it is a culmination of all the teams that have contributed to the Utah program before this year as well." The ranks, which seem to mark Utah as a force to be reckoned with, reflect the collective effort of a decade and a half's worth of Ute divers.
Two notable athletes at the forefront of the Utes this year are Kathryn Grant and Callie Eaglestone, both of whom qualified for the NCAA Championships previously. Eaglestone, in particular, captured the title of Big 12 Freshman Diver of the Meet last season, signaling a flourishing career ahead. On the men's side, Elias Petersen returns as last season's Big 12 Men's Diver of the Year, looking to build on his All-America status. Alongside him is newcomer Alex Just, an Auburn transfer hoping to make waves in the upcoming competitions.
With a record like this, the anticipation for the Utes' performance in the upcoming season is heating up. On October 24, the team is set to dive into their season opener against the Cowboys in Wyoming. Local fans eager to see the action for themselves can catch the athletes on October 31st, when the Utes face off against Colorado Mesa at the Ute Natatorium.
