Authorities responded to an incident at Monroe Middle School after an 8th-grade student was found with an unloaded handgun on campus. The discovery came during an investigation into a report of the student possessing a vape device, according to a Monroe Police Department Facebook post.
School staff, acting on the tip, conducted a search that led to the discovery. A school resource officer (SRO) responded promptly to ensure the situation was resolved without harm. "At no time were any students or staff threatened, and no injuries occurred from this incident," the Monroe Police Department Facebook post stated. Local law enforcement, in collaboration with school authorities, is investigating how the student came into possession of the handgun.
Due to the involvement of a minor, few details have been released. The Monroe Police Department stated that the school staff’s response helped ensure the safety of students and personnel.
