Interim President Alan L. Smith of Utah State University (USU) recently addressed the university community with updates on various institution-wide initiatives and changes, as reported by USU Today. In his message, Smith highlighted the opening of new campus facilities and memorials held for fallen police officers. He emphasized the university's ongoing commitment to student needs and the fulfillment of its land-grant mission in the state of Utah.
The institution's strategic reinvestment plan has been a subject of miscommunication, with media headlines suggesting a rejection. Instead, the legislation demands a review and revision once a new president is appointed. "Our plan was not rejected. Rather, a motion was approved by the legislative Executive Appropriations Committee to have our plan examined and revised by our new president," Smith clarified. The plan, which addresses 10% of USU's instructional budget, is designed to remain adaptive as it engages with the academic community and stakeholders.
Smith assured the USU staff that, despite the ongoing review, strategic reallocation decisions already in place, including college mergers and structural changes, would not be reversed. "For example, we will not be undoing our college mergers, other structural moves, or disinvestments," he stated, as per USU Today, maintaining that these actions must proceed to add value to the institution.
Reiterating USU's commitment to an environment of free speech and institutional neutrality, Smith addressed concerns from both sides about hosting a Turning Point USA event on campus. "Offering a platform (or not) based on prejudgment, whether from a political, religious, identity, or other personally held vantage, undermines our pursuit of knowledge," he explained, as obtained by USU Today. Acknowledging the varied opinions, Smith reaffirmed that the institution would continue to provide a marketplace of ideas that is reflective of its democratic principles.
The note also included personnel updates, with Smith expressing gratitude to departing Chief of Staff Kerri Davidson and welcoming newcomers to the administrative team. Among those joining USU are Kris Winter as senior vice president of undergraduate affairs, Cameron Walker as vice president and director of athletics, and Courtney White as special advisor to the president. Smith praised their respective records and their shared dedication to enhancing student experience and institutional goals at USU, despite the broader challenges faced by higher education today. "I am eager to work with them on pursuing the long-term impact and well-being of USU," Smith told USU Today.
