As the leaves turn and the chill sets in, Utah's birding enthusiasts have something to chirp about. According to the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, two beginner-friendly bird-watching events are on the horizon, aimed to coincide with the fall migration period. These educational outings are not just about spotting feathered friends but also serve as a primer for the uninitiated in the art of birding, complete with achieving the Utah Birding Slam's beginner slam.
The first taste of avian adventure is scheduled for Nov. 8, with a meeting point at Moab's Lions Park. An experienced biologist will be guiding the group, and attendees are encouraged to come equipped with binoculars, a bottle of water, and a smartphone prepped with the eBird app for real-time bird cataloging. "We are hoping to see a few of the birds common in the Moab area, including the red-tailed hawk, northern flicker, Woodhouse's scrub-jay, canyon wren and spotted towhee," Brandon Behling, DWR Southeastern Region Outreach Manager, mentioned by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Pre-registration is recommended to stay updated on any weather-related changes.
Not to be left out, the folks in Price will have their bird-watching soiree on Nov. 15, starting at the DWR Price Office. Post an initial briefing and instructions for the Utah Birding Slam, participants will move to Wood Hill, a locale known for its bird diversity. "At the Price viewing event, we are hoping to see bird species like the pinyon jay, mountain bluebird, house finch, juniper titmouse and golden eagle during our outing," Behling added, as per Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Like its Moab counterpart, this event is free, with advanced registration recommended through Eventbrite.
