The UTEP soccer team is gearing up for a challenging match against Sam Houston State, taking to the road with hopes of turning their season around after a rocky start.
According to UTEP Athletics, the Miners, standing at 3-7-3 overall and 0-2-2 in Conference USA play, are set to face off against a Sam Houston squad that boasts a 5-4-2 record, including 2-1-1 in league games. The forthcoming engagement, slated for 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT Saturday, is the solitary match of the week for both teams and also marks the Bearkats' home finale.
Despite UTEP's so far winless streak in CUSA matches, the team showed resilience in their last game, rallying from a two-goal deficit to tie with Kennesaw State. The team's ability to recover from setbacks will be tested once again as they have remained unbeaten in their past confrontations with Sam Houston, posting a 9-0-1 record in the series.
Sam Houston, on the other hand, is coming off a tough loss, with their four-match unbeaten streak ended by a last-second goal from WKU on Oct. 5. The team's offense is noted for its pressure, ranking second in CUSA and 98th nationally for shots on goal per game. "The Bearkats enter the contest tied for sixth in the league standings with seven points," stated the UTEP Athletics, acknowledging the balanced attack that has seen eight different players score this season.
