Honolulu residents can expect changing weather this week, with isolated showers over Kauai and Oahu as a trough north of the islands brings southeasterly winds and land and sea breezes through Thursday. A mid-level low northeast of the islands is not expected to affect local weather, and skies should clear by afternoon after morning clouds over Oahu, according to the National Weather Service.
Moderate trade winds are expected to return by the end of the week as high pressure builds to the northeast. However, "as some deterministic model guidance is hinting at another surface trough developing just north of the Hawaiian Islands late this week, which would disrupt winds and increase shower activity," forecasters report low confidence in the system’s timing and impact, as reported by the National Weather Service.
A southeast trough is moving over Kauai this morning, bringing “scattered showers are expected along the trough with moderate northeast trade winds filling in over Kauai waters.” Other areas will have light winds until midweek, when moderate trade winds return as high pressure builds near the islands. The north-northwest swell is decreasing, and minor coastal flooding is possible due to peak high tides from the lunar cycle. Fire weather risk remains low with light winds, increased showers, and temperature inversions between 7,000 and 8,000 feet. No watches, warnings, or advisories are in effect, as stated by the National Weather Service.
