Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore has once again stepped off the ice and into the arena of philanthropy, reinforcing his commitment to the fight against breast cancer with recent contributions through "Kay's Power Play," the foundation he established in honor of his late grandmother, Kay. According to News 3 LV, the organization dedicated $40,000 to Susan G. Komen Nevada and another $10,000 to Las Vegas Breast Cancer Warriors a charity focused on providing mental and social support to breast cancer patients, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The initiative, which has been active for six years, extends beyond financial aid, aiming to facilitate breast cancer screenings and extend support to patients in Southern Nevada. "It's incredible," Theodore told KTNV. "I know my grandmother would be so proud — starting this in her name and just being able to help as many women as we can." Alongside this support, Nevada State Sen. Julie Pazina, a breast cancer survivor, announced an additional $4,000 grant from "We Work Health" to further aid the Las Vegas Breast Cancer Warriors.
Theodore's personal battle with testicular cancer at the age of 22 has lent a resonant authenticity to his advocacy for early detection and proactive healthcare. "Everyone should check themselves or book that doctor’s appointment," Theodore emphasized, as noted by KTNV. "It’s really important — early detection is the biggest thing." His foundation's latest gesture was made at Comprehensive's Henderson Treatment Center where Dr. Rupesh Parikh, president of the Comprehensive Cancer Centers, outlined how the donations would specifically help low-income families and individuals in rural communities who may face barriers to getting essential care.
For Theodore, these efforts are inseparable from the spirit of community that defines both the city and the sport he loves. "The community here is amazing," Theodore observed, noting the shared sentiment of personal investment. "It’s very personal — for myself, my family, and for everyone who’s been affected. It really hits home," as reported by KTNV. This blend of personal experience and collective strength continues to drive "Kay's Power Play," which, through partnerships and philanthropy, facilitates care for women who might otherwise lack access to essential screenings and treatments.
The impact of Theodore's work echoes across the Southern Nevada landscape, striking a chord with individuals far beyond the rink where he usually captures attention. Chevrolet Las Vegas Breast Cancer Warriors and Susan G. Komen Nevada have received substantial boosts from "Kay's Power Play," affirming Theodore's influence in realms far removed from the slap of pucks and the cheer of crowds, but similarly rallied by the spirit of support and the hope for victory over a pervasive opponent.
