Wake County Public Libraries are putting a new spin on the age-old tradition of storytime with their latest initiative: the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge. Targeted at kiddos from the time they're in diapers until they're packing their miniature backpacks for school, the program aims to build early literacy skills that are crucial for academic success. To break it down simply, families are encouraged to read together, racking up a total of 1,000 books before the little ones hit kindergarten.
Research firmly backs up the initiative, showing that reading to young children can significantly bolster their language, listening, and critical thinking skills. Plus, parents are likely to quickly realize that there’s something uniquely special to both grow and learn together. "Reading with your child is one of the most powerful ways to prepare them for school and a lifetime of learning," said Wake County Commissioner Tara Waters, according to a statement. She further notes that the challenge serves to strengthen family bonds through the shared journey of stories.
To participate, families can pick up a reading tracker from any library branch or download one in English or Spanish from the county's website. What's key here is to track every book, no matter where it's read—whether at home, in daycare, or at a library program. In a comforting nod to the reading habits of young children, even if one book becomes the bedtime favorite, it's all good. Every read, re-read, or half-recited from memory book counts towards the goal. Why? Because repetition actually helps to cement those emerging literacy skills.
And because we’re human and everyone loves a little recognition, Wake County Libraries is ready to celebrate milestones with you. For every 100 books logged, the mini readers can snag a sticker at their local branch and discover more about their upcoming 1,000 Books Bash events. When they hit the halfway mark at 500 books, there’s a special prize waiting for them. On reaching the finish line of 1,000 books, there's even more fanfare—a completion prize and the kind of recognition that only a library can give. If you're stumped on where to start, don't fret—librarians have pulled together a recommended reading list to set families on the right path.
