Walmart, having acquired the property earlier this year for $34 million, seeks to overhaul the site into a contemporary mixed-use space filled with retail, dining, and entertainment venues. To facilitate this transformation, a Walmart affiliate has applied for a $7.5 million state grant, specifically from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, which lists Monroeville Mall Gateway as a candidate for its 2025 funding, according to WTAE.
The grant application outlines the vision for the project's future—a metamorphosis of the existing layout into a modern destination meant to bolster the local economy. According to WPXI, as reported by the Pittsburgh Business Times, the project promises comprehensive demolition followed by the construction of new structures to accommodate the latest in commercial and social infrastructure, reports indicate.
Local business owners, including those who have recently invested in property and innovation within the mall, were notified just last week about the impending changes. Bryan Kiger, the owner of the Pickle Parlor, asserts that the community deserved more transparency, suggesting that clear communication could foster a collaborative spirit among stakeholders aiming to find mutually beneficial outcomes. Rick Murray, owner of SpectroDolce Confectionary, lamented the need to relocate, particularly given the business's role as an employer of individuals on the autism spectrum, per reports with WTAE. Business owners were told by Cypress Equities, the Dallas-based company undertaking the redevelopment, that they can remain in their current locations until April 2027.
