Brace yourself for a weekend of detours and delays in the Phoenix area as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) embarks on several freeway improvements. From October 3 to October 6, ADOT will enforce closures on major routes to facilitate a widening project and pavement sealing according to an announcement on their website. The department suggests that motorists allow extra travel time and use alternate paths as different segments of Loop 101 and Loop 303 will be temporarily inaccessible.
The disruption includes a full closure of southbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) between Princess Drive/Pima Road and Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Oct. 6). This interruption, happening for a widening project, will also affect eastbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Scottsdale and Hayden roads. For those who must travel eastbound on Loop 101, ADOT advises exiting to southbound Scottsdale Road, then using eastbound Shea Boulevard to reconnect with Loop 101.
Furthermore, northbound Loop 303 will be entirely closed from I-10 to Happy Valley Parkway in the West Valley, starting 10 p.m. Friday to 1 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 4), this is for sealing the pavement. Drivers are encouraged to take alternative freeway routes, such as the north- and eastbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) between I-10 and I-17. The agency notes that northbound Loop 303 will be reopened in sections as the sealing work progresses.
Similarly, southbound Loop 303 will shut down between Happy Valley Parkway and I-10 in the West Valley, from 10 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 5), again for pavement sealing. Consider using west- and southbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) between I-17 and I-10 for an alternate route. Local detours will also guide southbound Loop 303 traffic exiting at Happy Valley Parkway with the promise that sections will reopen progressively as work advances.
The timing of these operations could shift if weather conditions or other unforeseen factors impact the planned schedule. These ongoing infrastructure enhancements, largely supported by Proposition 400 tax funds and the recently approved Proposition 479, are integral to the Maricopa County region's Regional Transportation Plan. For updates on highway conditions in real time, ADOT recommends using the AZ511.gov website, the AZ511 app, or simply dialing 511.
