Corporal Michael Schmidt was recognized as the First Responder of the Year for Wisconsin's 22nd Assembly District at Madison's Capitol Building last week. As per the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, Schmidt began his career with the office in 2007 and attended the award ceremony with his family.
Schmidt has served as Team Leader for the Crash Reconstruction Unit, Field Training Officer, and member of the Peer Support and Critical Incident Debrief Teams. He is also a certified Taser instructor. The Sheriff's Office highlighted an instance where Schmidt applied a tourniquet that saved an individual from losing a limb.
In addition to his law enforcement work, Schmidt volunteers as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician with the Village of Belgium Fire Department, with over 18 years of service in total.
