An officer-involved shooting in the suburb of Alsip has left a woman dead after she allegedly pointed a replica gun at police, following a series of threatening 911 calls she made. The incident, as detailed by the NBC Chicago report, began around 10 p.m. Monday when the woman called claiming she was being chased by an active shooter.
According to information from both NBC Chicago and FOX 32 Chicago, the same individual continued to make calls to 911, stating she had a firearm, claiming to have killed a police officer, and threatening to kill another; officers tracked her phone to the west end of Burr Oak Cemetery, where the encounter leading to her death took place. She ran from authorities, scaled a fence, and crossed Cicero Avenue, despite officers giving multiple commands for her to stop.
When confronted by law enforcement, she reportedly turned and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the officers, which prompted one of them to discharge their weapon, striking the woman. "Officers began life-saving measures until Alsip Fire Department paramedics arrived and took over," stated the FOX 32 Chicago report. The woman was subsequently pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The Alsip police found a replica Colt firearm at the scene and reiterated that the incident appears to be isolated with no further threat to the public. The woman's identity had not been disclosed at the time of reporting requesting The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit is now leading the investigation into the shooting, as reported by NBC Chicago. The Alsip Police Department is encouraging anyone with further information to come forward and make contact with them or the Illinois State Police.
