A tragic farm incident in McHenry County has claimed the life of a 38-year-old Woodstock man. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating the event, which involved a fatal electrocution on Monday, October 27.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office report, the mishap occurred as farm equipment made contact with an overhead power line. The equipment, a grain cart linked to a John Deere 9520RX tractor, was in the ditch beside County Line Road, in the process of transferring grain to a semi-truck on the roadway, when its grain chute struck the power line, causing it to fall. Operating the semi-truck, the 38-year-old man was electrocuted when he attempted to approach the now-energized tractor.
First responders from the Boone County Fire Protection District Two had initially been called to the scene at around 5:17 p.m., but upon the realization that the incident occurred within McHenry County lines, sheriff's deputies arrived at 5:31 p.m. The tractor operator, a 56-year-old male from Hebron, was injured but reported in fair condition at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.
ComEd representatives were called to the site to manage the downed power lines, working to ensure that further risk to public safety was mitigated. Tragically, despite their quick response to address the electrical hazard, the Woodstock man was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a somber reminder of the dangers faced by those working with and around heavy agricultural machinery.
The investigation into the specifics of this incident continues, as stated by officials, with the McHenry County Sheriff's Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office leading the inquiry. Further updates are expected as authorities piece together the circumstances that led to this devastating accident; more information will be provided as it becomes available.
