The City of Woodstock has been recognized for its urban planning efforts, having been awarded the 2026–2028 PlanFirst designation by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This accolade is given to Georgia communities that showcase exemplary planning practices, including engaging their citizens, maintaining strong leadership, and implementing their comprehensive plans effectively.
This year Woodstock finds itself among fourteen communities distinguished by this honor, indicating a calibrated blend of vision and pragmatism in the city's approach to development. To be eligible for this designation, a city must meet a host of performance criteria, including maintaining Qualified Local Government status, having an updated Service Delivery Strategy, and complying with state reporting requirements, despite, some bureaucratic tangles.
According to an official news release from Woodstock's municipal government, Mayor Michael Caldwell expressed pride in the city's achievement, saying "This designation affirms what we already know. Woodstock leads with vision and delivers with action. It reflects years of thoughtful planning, public input, and collaboration.” He emphasized that the PlanFirst status arms Woodstock with new resources to develop a city that welcomes future generations as a home, not just a stopgap residence.
With this recognition comes a suite of benefits rigging the city for further progress. PlanFirst communities gain advantages in state and federal grant applications, and on occasion, access to reduced-interest loans—offering more than just a pat on the back, but a tangible lift in the city's community development pursuits. Woodstock's commitment to transparency is mirrored in its public undertakings, working steadfastly to bring the comprehensive plan's objectives to fruition.
Melissa Sigmund, Woodstock's Community Development Director, also weighed in on the importance of the designation and the city's forward momentum in growth planning. She declared as per the City of Woodstock release, "We look forward to continuing our work with residents, neighborhood associations, and regional partners to turn plan into action."
