A 15-year-old boy's life was tragically cut short in a drive-by shooting on the Near West Side last Friday afternoon. WGN-TV reported that the shooting occurred at around 4:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of West Grenshaw Street, a segment of Little Italy. The victim, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as John Thomas, was on the sidewalk when an unidentified vehicle approached and an assailant within fired at him, striking him in the chest and right leg, as per WGN-TV.
Lamentably, efforts to swiftly identify and apprehend the culprit have yet to bear fruit. According to the same report, authorities arrived on the scene to find the area cordoned off with caution tape and a bicycle lying within the perimeter. This piece of evidence could potentially seem to be connected to Thomas, though officials have yet to confirm its relevance to the investigation.
Following the incident, Thomas was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. ABC7 Chicago added that, as of now, the circumstances leading up to the young boy's death remain unclear, and detectives from Area Three are conducting the investigation in earnest. No additional information concerning the possible motive or suspects has been promptly provided by the police.
To aid in this investigation, the Chicago Police Department urges anyone with information to either contact CPD Area Three Detectives directly at 312-744-8263 or to anonymously submit a tip at CPDtip.com. The police have issued an appeal, imploring the public to dial 911 with pertinent information.
