Franklin Square, Long Island, became the scene of a substantial firefighting effort on Sunday evening after a fire broke out in a local bagel shop and quickly spread to an adjacent ice shop. According to ABC7 New York, the blaze started at 529 Bagels located at 529 Franklin Ave, before damaging Ralph's Italian Ices. Efforts to extinguish the four-alarm fire, which began just after 5 p.m., required the deployment of around 200 firefighters from Nassau County.
Initial reports indicate that the fire originated in the basement of the building, however, the cause remains under investigation. Assistant Chief Marshal Andrew Schmitt informed PIX 11 News that firefighters attempted an internal attack but, were eventually forced back and had to adopt a "defense attack," due to intensifying flames. Fortunately, the building was empty at the time, and no injuries have been reported.
The building, described as a one-story, 50-foot-by-50-foot structure, now bears the scars of significant damage. A video circulating on Citizen app captures the progression of the disaster, showing the fire escalating from smoke billowing out to flames erupting from the rooftop. It apparently took over four hours to bring the fire under control.
Such incidents, while devastating for the business owners and the community, serve as a stark reminder of the impermanence vested in the brick and, mortar of our communal havens. Officials have ruled out suspicions of malfeasance, according to the same report by PIX 11, deeming the fire "non-suspicious." The investigation into the incident continues, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
