A tragic road incident left five people injured on a Sunday afternoon when an SUV and a sedan collided head-on along Route 14, in an area of unincorporated Harvard, officials say.
According to a report by NBC Chicago, the accident happened just after 4 p.m., near the intersection of Route 14 and Lembcke Road. The collision, which involved a sedan and an SUV, resulted in injuries to both children and adults, with one child being thrown from a car seat and another being transported with minor injuries. A medical helicopter was called to the scene to transport the severely injured child to a Level 1 trauma center.
The Harvard Fire Protection District disclosed that upon arrival, first responders found the two vehicles heavily damaged and debris strewn across the road. Firefighters worked to extricate the male driver of the sedan, who was trapped inside his vehicle, and he was then taken in serious condition to a nearby hospital, as ABC 7 Chicago reported.
There were also two adults in the SUV, both experienced moderate injuries and were transported for medical care, along with the second child from the SUV, who sustained minor injuries. Route 14 remained closed for an extended period, nearly 90 minutes, while the scene was attended to by emergency services. Investigations into the cause of the head-on collision are underway, led by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.
