With the Thanksgiving weekend upon us, bringing a surge in travel and festivities, AAA is stepping up to deter impaired driving by offering its "Tow to Go" program. Designed as a safety net for those who might otherwise take the wheel under the influence, the service provides a free tow and a confidential ride home within a ten-mile radius. "Since holiday celebrations can lead to risky choices, AAA offers Tow to Go to prevent those choices from turning into tragedies," Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group, told ourMidland.com.
Travelers returning Monday morning, expecting highways and airports to swell with holiday-makers, can access Tow to Go through that time. Available to AAA members and non-members alike, the program is only intended as a last resort. The service, which doesn't accept reservations, operates strictly on a need basis, shared FOX 5 Atlanta. The number to call for assistance is 855-2-TOW-2-GO.
According to the program details, Tow to Go can be reached by calling (855) 2-TOW-2-GO from 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26 until 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2025. Travel statistics indicate that around 81.8 million Americans are anticipated to travel at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving, with 2.6 million Michiganders contributing to this number, marking a 1.4% rise over the previous year and setting a new record, according to ourMidland.com.
With over 12,000 lives lost in alcohol-related crashes in just 2023, AAA is emphasizing the role of programs like Tow to Go in combating such statistics. "AAA encourages everyone to celebrate responsibly by planning ahead," Jenkins urged. In a dance with potential danger on the road, travelers are reminded to designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or stay overnight if needed to ensure Thanksgiving remains joyous and safe for all, as detailed in a statement obtained by ourMidland.com.
Amid concerns about flight cancellations and travel disruptions, Michigan residents are nonetheless eagerly planning travel, with the vast majority opting to drive. "Michigan residents are embracing the Thanksgiving spirit with record-breaking travel plans this year," said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. Some are driving across the state or flying across the country, while people are showing flexibility and resilience, making time to connect with loved ones and relying most on driving, as Haas told ourMidland.com.
