The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) reports that construction on the wildlife overpass along Interstate 17, just south of Flagstaff, is more than 50% complete and remains on schedule for completion in fall 2026. ADOT noted that the project has paused for its winter break starting yesterday with work expected to resume next year when conditions improve.
The overpass currently features a newly poured concrete deck spanning 100 feet in width, designed to provide a safe crossing for elk, deer, and other wildlife. Once completed, the structure will be covered with soil, local grasses, and plants to blend with the surrounding environment. ADOT reports that construction during the winter months will not cause major traffic restrictions for drivers.
ADOT is partnering with the Arizona Game and Fish Department to reduce motorist-animal collisions along I-17. The project is funded primarily through the Federal Highway Administration's Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program and includes installing wildlife fencing along 8 miles of the highway. This fencing, scheduled for completion next year, will guide animals to the overpass located north of the Willard Springs Road interchange.
The overpass and fencing target the stretch between Stoneman Lake Road and Flagstaff, where 58% of wildlife-related crashes previously occurred. Of these incidents, 75% involved elk, which can weigh up to 1,100 pounds, creating significant risks for motorists. Drivers can monitor current road conditions through ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov or via the free AZ511 app, available for both Apple and Android devices.
