It's been over a year since tragedy struck the Brown family and the local hockey community in Affton. Colin Brown, a 16-year-old hockey player, was fatally hit by a stray bullet on the highway coming home from a game, an incident that left his family, friends, and teammates grappling with a profound loss. In a dedicated effort to honor his memory, the newly unveiled Lounge 72 at the Affton Ice Rink stands as a testament to the young player's legacy.
According to a report by KSDK, the lounge not only serves as a space for team gatherings but also memorializes Brown with walls adorned with photos and memorabilia. In one moment that particularly struck his mother, Tracey Brown described, "There’s an amazing one where his eyes look like he’s looking right at you." The room was built with the support of the community, reflecting who Colin was and cementing his spirit within his favorite place.
The Affton Hockey community has not only rallied to create a space for reminiscence and growth but also to collectively grieve and find a path forward. An emotional ceremony marking the lounge opening included former teammates participating in a friendly scrimmage and witnessing the unveiling of a championship banner bearing Brown's name. As reported by First Alert 4, former teammate Max Nadaud remarked on the importance of cherishing every moment on the ice, saying, "You really just gotta leave it all out there because you don’t know when your last game is, your last shift."
While the Browns continue to navigate their grief, they have also embarked on a journey to help others through the 72 Acts of Kindness Foundation. This initiative, already in motion according to FOX 2 Now, is in tribute to Colin's generous spirit and aims to inspire positive actions within the community. "What do you need?" has shifted from a question posed to the Browns, now an offering to their community, embodying the very essence of the legacy they aim to perpetuate in their son's name.
The story of Colin Brown, and the unity it has precipitated, echoes far beyond the icy confines where he once skated with fervor. The Affton Ice Rink continues to accept contributions for the ongoing development of Lounge 72. All while, four individuals connected to the tragic incident are awaiting further legal proceedings, with a jury trial scheduled for the fall, as First Alert 4 reported.
