Authorities at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport were thrust into high alert on October 20, when a tip from Cartersville Police Department alerted Atlanta Police to a male suspect accused of making terroristic threats. The tip indicated the individual was aiming to orchestrate an attack on the crowded airport terminal, according to a statement by the Atlanta Police Department (APD).
The incident, which unfolded around 9:40 a.m. involved APD officers swiftly responding to the scene, following a 'person armed' call—a situation demanding an immediate and comprehensive law enforcement presence. Atlanta officers disseminated a BOLO, essentially a dragnet for the suspect's description and vehicle and it didn't take long before they apprehended the suspect within the South Terminal, near the security checkpoint.
Meanwhile, perimeter teams, intent on clearing any associated threats, inspected the suspect’s vehicle where a rifle was clearly visible. The APD K-9 units then swept the vehicle, uncovering the rifle seated in the backseat, a presence that, once cleared, signaled an end to the immediate danger. "The suspect was identified as Billy Jo Cagle," born in October 1976, and he now faces multiple charges, including Terroristic Threats and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, as detailed in the APD’s press release.
Airport operations quickly returned to normal after the arrest, restoring order at the busy travel hub. Officials said there is no longer any active threat. According to APD, the situation is secure, though the incident remains under active investigation as authorities work to piece together what happened and examine Cagle’s actions leading up to his arrest.
