Anoka County Job Training Center is on the move with a new grant designed to propel residents into the agricultural industry. The center has received $250,000 from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development’s Minnesota Job Skills Partnership, aiming to ramp up workforce training through its Growing Careers initiative. With $2.4 million in total funds dispersed across the state, Anoka's JTC stands as the single metro area beneficiary.
The provided grant will, to some extent, help individuals earn credentials in high demand. Specifically, JTC's program will focus on class A and B commercial driver’s licenses, complete with hazmat and air brake endorsements. The goal is clear: help participants integrate smoothly into agriculture-related employment. As per an announcement, the JTC will partner with the Minnesota Propane Association, Minnesota Truck and Trainer, and Metro North Adult Basic Education, ensuring a comprehensive approach to training and subsequent job placement.
This effort comes in response to a growing need for skilled farm labor. As District 7 Commissioner and Human Services Committee lead, Mandy Meisner has stated, this is "just the first step in the next chapter of JTC’s journey to continue offering more to our residents and job seekers." Indeed, her excitement for the program's launch and its potential for success was palpable.
With the overarching aim to quickly increase the ranks of those entering agricultural careers, the Growing Careers grant supports up to $500,000 for training programs. They especially target the dislocated workers, along with those requiring a boost in basic skills or income levels. Nicole Swanson, the JTC's department director, told the press, "Our team is really eager to see where this program takes our department and help the community members who will reap its benefits." This emphasis on practical skills development reflects the findings of DEED's Minnesota Occupations in Demand tool, which anticipates above-average growth in farming-related careers over the coming decade.
