The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests plan to conduct prescribed fire operations next week to reduce overgrown vegetation that increases wildfire risk. According to the Arizona Wildfire, the burns are scheduled for this coming Tuesday until Thursday next week, depending on weather conditions and required approvals.
The two main areas targeted are the Brookbank unit, covering 3,647 acres near Forest Lakes, Arizona, and the West Park unit, spanning 3,855 acres south of Heber-Overgaard near Forest Road 166. Temporary closures may occur for safety reasons. The forest service advises residents and travelers near Forest Lakes and Heber-Overgaard to expect visible smoke and reduced visibility along Highway 260. Drivers should slow down, use caution, and turn on headlights when traveling through smoke.
Operations could be delayed or canceled if weather conditions are unsuitable. Updates on prescribed burns, road closures, and smoke advisories will be posted on the forest’s website, social media, and InciWeb, the interagency incident information system.
Residents concerned about air quality can monitor conditions using the AirNow website or app. The forest service stated it will coordinate with county emergency management officials to ensure the burns are conducted safely and responsibly.
