Arizona is on a mission to reshape its landscape, with the Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) rolling out a trifecta of fuels reduction projects to ward off the threat of wildfires and maintain forest health. According to the DFFM, these efforts are not just about playing defense against the flames, but also about nurturing the woods back to their prime.

The Shumway Mastication project up in the northeast is taking aim at the encroachment of junipers on 645 acres of state trust land. The DFFM has plans to strip away these invaders and return the land to its grassland glory, as laid out in a statement. And while the machines rumble into action in Shumway, down south in the Santa Rita Experimental Range, crews plan to get their hands dirty with the Florida Canyon project, working beside roads to curb the chances of wildfire starts, a frequent headache in the state.

Over at McDowell Mountain Regional Park, brushes with urban developments have the DFFM focused on maintenance mode. Workers there will mix hand thinning with a touch of herbicide to reinforce fuel breaks that stand as a bulwark to protect Fountain Hills and Scottsdale from Mother Nature’s fiery tendencies. This meticulous regimen is vital, as it offers firefighters not just an edge in the battle against wildfires but also a sanctuary of safety to operate in.

In the grander scheme, these projects are pieces of a bigger puzzle. With a target to treat some 40,000 acres across Arizona in 2026, the DFFM is upping its game from the previous fiscal year. This is an uptick from FY 25, with an ambition for a greener, safer state landscape.
