As the Thanksgiving exodus hits full swing in Arizona, state transportation agencies are employing novel measures to ensure smoother journeys for millions on the move. The freshly implemented I-17 flex lanes are coming into action, an 8-mile reversible lane system stretching between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point, a strategic attempt to curb the perennial congestion woes during peak travel times, FOX 10 Phoenix reported.
The lanes, conceived to address the heavy traffic between the Valley and the High Country, are praised by Arizona travelers for their role in alleviating the sluggish pace of holiday commuting; open northbound through Saturday, they shift direction on Sunday to aid the return flow. "Last night we came up to Sedona, and it seemed like traffic was running great, it's just nice to have those extra two lanes," said one driver, reflecting a sentiment echoed by many in the early hours of the lanes' operation, according to a FOX 10 Phoenix interview.
Simultaneously, regional authorities are advising motorists on best practices to dodge the inevitable traffic snarls, despite the absence of planned freeway closures across the Valley from Wednesday afternoon through Monday morning, a breath of fresh air for those familiar with the usual Thanksgiving travel disruptions. The Arizona Department of Transportation emphasizes the need for preparedness and patience, encapsulated in advice from Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman Doug Nintzel, "There’s always a chance that there will be a disabled vehicle or a crash that could either slow traffic on a highway or close the highway," Nintzel advised, as reported by KTAR News 92.3 FM.
With gas prices nominally higher than last year's holiday season, averaging at $3.34 per gallon, AAA spokesman Julian Parades stresses the importance of fuel-efficient driving habits, recommending travelers "stick to the speed limit, slow down, make sure your tires are properly inflated," advice that rings ever pertinent when tackling the holiday surge, relayed in an interview by KTAR News 92.3 FM. Moreover, in times like these, when each mile might stretch on beyond the horizon of patience, nurturing the nugget of wisdom to leave early could be the thin line distinguishing a holiday cheer from a gridlock groan, windy roads await, and the savvy sojourner plans ahead.
