In a strategic move to bolster its workforce, Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) plans to increase its starting salary for police officers to a notable $90,012, surpassing any nearby jurisdiction in the National Capital Region. The announcement, detailed on Arlington County's official website, is part of a push to address staffing challenges in law enforcement agencies, which have generally seen a decline in recent years.
Starting July 1, 2026, officers transferring from other agencies, known as lateral officers, will now be able to immediately start earning up to $103,330. To sweeten the deal and to quickly attract potential candidates, applicants are being offered a hiring bonus of up to $25,000. As reported by Arlington County, this pay increase will automatically come into effect with the start of the fiscal year, and interested candidates are urged to begin the hiring process now to take advantage of the forthcoming salary hike.
Part of the revamped compensation structure comes from ACPD's new collective bargaining agreement, aimed not only to attract but also to retain officers. Existing ACPD officers occupying various ranks will see increases in their pay as well. In a statement to Arlington County officials, Chief Andy Penn stressed the potential impact of this change. "The new starting salary will be very impactful in our ability to make significant progress in refilling our ranks following several years of decreased staffing across the law enforcement profession," he said.
ACPD emphasizes the importance of investing in its personnel, noting the array of benefits that come with a law enforcement career with the department. The package is rounded out with perks like a working week equivalent to 37.5 hours for patrol officers, full salary during academy training, and a robust wellness program. The department also points to opportunities for career development and progression, including a 25-year retirement plan. To further to attract candidates, ACPD is hosting Virtual Career Expos this November, where applicants can learn more about the department and take the first steps in the hiring process.
