Residents across the South Lawndale and Hermosa neighborhoods are on high alert following a spree of armed robberies reported by the Chicago Police Department. The robberies, all dating back to November 1, involved assailants using a stolen vehicle to ambush victims at gunpoint, demanding their belongings.
The pattern of crimes occurred in quick succession in the early morning hours, between 3:05 a.m. and 3:45 a.m., in various locations, which include the 3700 block of W. 25th St. and the 4400 block of W. Armitage, among others. Lone individuals faced the threat of violence as the group of 2-4 African American males, reportedly aged 18-30, not only brandished firearms but also resorted to pistol-whipping or battering some of the victims before fleeing.
Chicago Police have released a description of the offenders, who were seen wearing all black or dark-colored clothing and ski masks, and were last observed escaping in a silver Infiniti M37, confirmed to be stolen. The authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and have provided a series of safety reminders for the community. These include not pursuing the assailants, valuing life over property, and ensuring to dial 9-1-1 immediately while trying to recall any unique physical characteristics of the offenders.
The series of incidents has caused considerable unease in the community, with local forums discussing ways to stay safe. In light of the robberies, the police stress the importance of not touching anything at a crime scene and soliciting contact information from any potential witnesses. "Never resist a robbery," the advisory notes, emphasizing the sanctity of life over material possessions.
