Atlanta resident Shaka Stayman, 44, has been charged with stealing over $1.1 million from the Massachusetts Unclaimed Property Division through fraudulent claims. Stayman allegedly submitted bogus documentation between September 2023 and August this year to claim property that did not belong to him, according to the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office.
Suffolk Superior Court charged Stayman with Larceny Over $1,200, Attempted Larceny Over $1,200, Money Laundering, Uttering a False Document, Presentation of False Claims, and Conspiracy. He pled not guilty on Friday last week and was held on $2 million bail. Additional claims he attempted could have added roughly $2.2 million in stolen funds.
Massachusetts State Police and Atlanta-area authorities recovered duplicate claim documents at Stayman’s home. Co-defendant Dwight Tucker is set for arraignment on Thursday. The case is being handled by Assistant Attorneys General Shane O’Sullivan and Richard Langweber, with support from Massachusetts and Georgia law enforcement agencies.
