In Austin, the spirit of giving played out vividly this Thanksgiving, as thousands of needy residents received warm meals, thanks to the combined efforts of charitable organizations and volunteers. Meals on Wheels Central Texas and Operation Turkey, the key players in this outpouring of community support, managed to serve a staggering number of meals throughout the city.

Meals on Wheels Central Texas, leading the charge, was able to successfully deliver 900 meals, a significant increase from previous years. According to CBS Austin, the organization rallied over 200 volunteers to distribute meals to homebound neighbors and those lacking companionship on this festive day. "Normally we do about 500 families or 500 individuals and about 600 meals," Henry Van de Putte, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels Central Texas, said, "because we have more people in need is why we need the volunteers in the first place."

Meanwhile, Operation Turkey also played a vital role, with their "Turkey Tailgate" preceding the holiday. Board member Kevin Grogan discussed with FOX 7 Austin the steps leading up to the main event, where volunteers prepped over a thousand turkeys and assembled meals. He emphasized that the day was about "being of service to others," bringing the community together in a massive volunteer effort to ensure no one went hungry on Thanksgiving.

Moreover, Operation Turkey's executive director emeritus, Richard Bagdonas, explained to CBS Austin the urgency of their mission amidst economic strain, noting that "everybody's feeling the pinch on their wallet this year and those folks that are in a very vulnerable situation have unfortunately found themselves looking at higher cost for their Thanksgiving meal." He found pride in the organization's ability to swiftly deliver a warm meal to those in need.
