The National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC has issued a chilly forecast for Baltimore today, with blustery conditions and a strong upper trough passing overhead. Residents in the region can expect another day of below-average temperatures, a first significant shot of cold air this season. According to the forecast discussion released early this morning, 850-mb temperatures have dropped to the -8 to -10 °C range, leading to an even colder day across the area.
Gusty west-northwesterly winds will continue to sweep through, requiring Wind Advisories along the Allegheny Front with gusts anticipated to reach up to 45 to 50 mph. The highest winds should be along the Allegheny Front, where Wind Advisories have been hoisted from 7 AM until 3 PM, said a statement by the National Weather Service. Wind chills are expected to drop significantly, with the blustery conditions bringing afternoon wind chills down into the 30s, and in higher elevations, confined to the single digits and teens.
The outlook isn't all brisk winds and cold fronts, though. As high pressure settles over the southern U.S. tonight, winds will shift, signaling a warmer Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will rise approximately 10 to 15 degrees from today's highs, returning to near-average levels for mid-November. However, mountain temperatures are predicted to remain cooler in areas where snow persists. The NWS forecast implies the potential need to closely monitor the wind gusts, which could approach Wind Advisory criteria again overnight.
Looking ahead into the latter half of the week, VFR conditions are expected for aviation, with the main concern being the persistent gusty winds. Westerly winds remain somewhat elevated into Thursday with gusts up to 25 knots or so, the NWS advised. The marine forecast echoes similar sentiments, with Gale Warnings in effect through this evening for all waters. Boaters should remain cautious as blustery conditions persist. The long-term forecast suggests mostly sunny skies and slightly above normal temperatures on Friday, with a return of rainfall chances coming Sunday as the next frontal system approaches.
