The streets of Federal Hill have been disrupted by an unexpected geological shift, leading to substantial road closures along a critical stretch of Baltimore's transport routes. FOX Baltimore reported that a portion of Key Highway, a major thoroughfare in the area, has been closed due to a sinkhole that has emerged, posing potential risks to drivers and pedestrians alike.
Authorities, including the Baltimore City Department of Transportation, have implemented detours to manage the flow of traffic around the afflicted zone. Key Highway is currently shut down in both directions between Covington and E. Cross Streets. Northbound traffic is being rerouted via E. Cross Street, while traffic heading east and southbound is being directed onto Covington Street.
WBAL-TV has provided additional details, confirming that the Baltimore City Department of Transportation is taking cautious measures, following the discovery of "a small sinkhole or divot in the street." In a visual context, SKY 11 footage has given the public a glimpse of the road deformity, underscoring the validity of the closures.
Problems on the road have a ripple effect, and the Maryland Transit Administration's 71 bus route has not been spared from disruption. The service is now being detoured in proximity to the impacted area.
The situation has prompted a response from the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, which is currently leading an investigation into the sinkhole's origin and potential remedies.
