A tragic incident unfolded in Beauregard Parish, where a man lost his life during what was supposed to be a duck hunting trip on Bundick Lake. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) agents are now leading an investigation into the fatal boating accident that occurred on Saturday.
The victim, identified as 58-year-old John F. Lowe from Deridder, was part of a four-man hunting party when their 14-foot aluminum boat began taking on water and eventually capsized. Initial reports shared by LDWF detailed that while all occupants wore personal flotation devices (PFDs) initially, Lowe removed his in an attempt to take off his waders, subsequently entering the water without it and not resurfacing.
Despite the early hour, with LDWF agents being alerted around 3 a.m., the three survivors managed to cling to the overturned vessel until a Good Samaritan came to their rescue. Lowe's body was recovered from the lake around 12:30 p.m. that day. The LDWF Enforcement Division is the main agency delving into the specifics of how this unfortunate event took place, as mentioned on the same news.
Support during the incident and the subsequent recovery operations included the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Allen Parish Fire Department Dive Team, alongside the LDWF Enforcement Division. The body of Lowe was handed over to the Beauregard Parish Coroner’s Office, which will work to establish an official cause of death.
