Yana Leonova, a 33-year-old Belorussian recently residing in Russia, faces charges in the U.S. for her role in a scheme to smuggle aviation components from the U.S. to Russia. Following her extradition from France, Leonova, who also goes by "Yana Liavonava," appeared in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, as the U.S. Attorney's Office detailed.
The indictment claims that after Russia invaded Ukraine in May 2022, Leonova took part in purchasing and illegally exporting U.S.-sourced aircraft equipment through a network involving stateside accomplices. This equipment was destined for private aircraft employed by a company already blacklisted by U.S. authorities, a situation presenting a stark reminder of the high stakes in global commerce and geography.
Working with co-conspirators, Leonova purportedly established a ruse to evade export restrictions, funneling the aviation components through intermediary companies in locations such as Armenia and the Maldives, and eventually to Russia, circumventing the licensing protocols mandated by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The department's Bureau of Industry and Security, suggesting a systematic approach to this circumvention, joined in the announcement of the charges.
Assisting in the investigation were elements of the FBI, including Special Agent in Charge Stephen A. Cyrus of the Kansas City Field Office, and the Bureau of Industry and Security's Office of Export Enforcement, with Jonathan Carson taking point, according to official statements. The pursuit of Leonova and her co-conspirators marks a concerted effort to enforce international sanctions and export control in a world ever vigilant against the shadowy practices in the theater of high-tech trade.
