Students at Ohio University recently took away more than just notes from a special event featuring New York Times bestselling author James Clear. On Oct. 1, Clear brought his expertise to students during the fifth annual Raymond A. Lancaster Executive Leadership Speaker Series, an event hosted by the Robert D. Walter Center for Strategic Leadership in the College of Business. According to Ohio University's news release, the audience had the opportunity to attend a live recording of The Learning Leader Show podcast, where host and Ohio University alumnus Ryan Hawk engaged Clear in a conversation on leadership, personal growth, and the small habits that can steer individuals towards success.

The event, supported by the Lancaster Family Endowment Fund and the Muck Family Foundation, drew a significant student crowd at Nelson Commons. Clear, famed for his book "Atomic Habits," shared insights into the incremental changes that can lead to significant life impacts, a message that has resonated with readers globally since its 2018 publication. He highlighted the essential nature of consistent effort and how to subtly form habits—a particularly relevant discussion for students at the nexus of their educational and professional journeys.

During his talk, Clear honed in on the crux of his methodology: the consistent, small actions that compound over time to produce substantial results. "The tricky thing about focus or priority," Clear said, as per an excerpt from the event covered by Ohio University, "is that if you only do it for one day, it’s not going to give you any bonus points. You have to work on it. The real change happens when the process becomes part of who you are." It's a straightforward yet compelling argument for integrating discipline into one's daily routine to breed the habits that can ultimately reshape a person's trajectory.
