The City of Boston is advancing its climate resilience efforts with a new project focused on protecting East Boston’s coastal community, including the Mario Umana Academy. According to a City of Boston news release, the Office of Climate Resilience announced plans to develop coastal infrastructure and a new waterfront park. The project, in partnership with Boston Public Schools, will allocate up to $640,000 for design, engineering, and community engagement.

Chris Osgood, Director of the Office of Climate Resilience, said the project supports students and schools, while Katherine Walsh, Director of Planning, Engineering, Sustainability, and Environment for Boston Public Schools, noted its importance in integrating climate resilience into educational spaces.

Located in an area identified for environmental justice concerns, the Mario Umana Academy will undergo engineering assessments and site investigations. The project will address coastal flooding, improve stormwater management, reduce urban heat, and strengthen coastal connections in East Boston. City Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata said the effort aims to protect local residents, students, and families from flooding and storm surge.

State Senator Lydia Edwards also expressed support, emphasizing the importance of investing in infrastructure that enhances safety and sustainability. School representatives, including Principal Akia-Nua Francillon and parent Eugenia Corbo, highlighted the project’s educational and community value.

The initiative is part of Boston’s broader coastal resilience strategy, which between 2017 and 2022 completed plans for the city’s 47-mile coastline. The Mario Umana Academy project will connect with the Resilient Border Street Waterfront project, creating a unified flood protection system for East Boston.
