The City of Boulder, in collaboration with the Boulder Chamber, has announced the return of a longstanding holiday tradition, the annual lighting of the Boulder Star. This iconic emblem will once again adorn Flagstaff Mountain, starting Veterans Day, November 11, as a beacon of holiday cheer and community solidarity. First shining its light in 1947, the Boulder Star has since grown to become a significant part of the local heritage, glowing on the mountain for 78 years and counting.
In what has evolved to become a treasured annual event, the Boulder Chamber and the City of Boulder have prepared to not only maintain but also enhance the Boulder Star experience. This year features the introduction of a remote sensor designed to more precisely control the star's luminosity. The intent is to conserve energy by making sure the star turns on and then shuts off at the appropriate times. Moreover, a safety feature will automatically deactivate the star during high winds to mitigate the risk of fire, a pressing concern in Colorado's mountainous terrain.
The lighting ceremony, as detailed by the City of Boulder, will be broadcast via a livestream on the Boulder Chamber YouTube channel at 6 p.m. on Nov. 11, enabling the entire community to join in the festivities remotely. The event promises to kick off the holiday season, continuing a practice that spans almost eight decades.
