A man was killed following a violent incident inside an apartment building. Authorities received a call around 8:54 p.m. last Saturday reporting an unconscious man at 1851 Phelan Place, PIX11 reports. Upon arrival, police found a 48-year-old victim who had been severely assaulted.
Police reported that the man was struck multiple times on the head and body with a metal object. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The next day, 37-year-old Anthony Mawuena was arrested and charged with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
Law enforcement sources told The New York Post that the weapon used in the attack was a metal locker door. The sources also confirmed that the suspect and the victim lived in the same apartment building, suggesting that their close proximity may have contributed to the incident.
As of last night, the suspect had been arrested and was also receiving medical treatment, but the exact motive behind the incident remains unclear. Police officials say the investigation is ongoing.
